On September 4th, 2008, Arizona State University Online, Brotha’ Love Productions and Southwest Green Magazine present Green Jazz at the Herberger staring Althea René. The first of 6 concerts, the Green Jazz Series will work to bring awareness of the economic, health and environmental benefits of sustainability and to help make these rewards a reality for tens of thousands of people in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area.

Born on December 25 in Detroit, Michigan, Althea began her musical career at age four as a classical flautist. She studied classical music while attending Howard University in Washington D.C. and later gained further musical inspiration from the accomplishments of Yusef Lateef and Dave Valentine. She has since developed her own creative style. With three solo projects to her credit, her forth project “No Restrictions“ is scheduled for a national release in September 2008. “No Restrictions“ is an assortment of urban contemporary tunes with an R&B twist.

A full-time performing artist who once worked as a Wayne County Deputy Sheriff (Detroit, Michigan), Althea René is regarded among musicians and enthusiasts as one of the nation’s most exciting solo improvisational flautists. Invited, as a featured artist on Brian Culbertson’s prestigious 2007 and Norman Brown’s 2008 Smooth Jazz All-Star Cruises and for BET Television’s “Studio Jams,” her performances emphasize her exceptional skill, soul, and artistic versatility. She puts on a fantastic show.

Part of the proceeds from Green Jazz at the Herberger will go in support of the Green Survival Initiative (GSI). GSI is a landmark Phoenix based sustainability project seeking to mitigate increasing energy costs for 7,000 low and fixed income households in Phoenix through the use of cost effective green technologies including Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs), and low flow shower heads.
